What is ERP in Food and Beverage Industry?

The Food and Beverage Industry is made up of all forms of food and drink, whether fresh or processed. The food and beverage industry refers to all the companies that transform raw agricultural goods into consumer food products. The supply chain for food and beverage products includes the manufacturing, packaging, distribution and sale of such goods to meet consumer demand.

There are two large segments of the food and beverage industry: production, in which edible goods are made; and distribution, in which those products reach consumers. The production group includes the processing of meats and cheeses, as well as the creation of soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, packaged foods—and other modified food items. Any product meant for human use, aside from pharmaceuticals, passes through this sector. The production sector excludes food and fresh produce that are grown on farms, as these fall under agriculture. Some examples of food and beverage include naturally-sourced products like juice, water, plant-based alternatives (such as veggie burgers), jerky—as well as other edible items that are environmentally friendly. For the distribution sector, it includes catering businesses, cafeterias, restaurants, pubs, delis and other food service establishments.

An ERP for food and beverage industry will collect and maintain all necessary information in one integrated database. Excellent quality control measures—such as harnessing the power of automation and integration with smart devices to ensure that your produce is up to standards—are built right into an effective system like this. An ERP system can provide transparency to all your business processes, tracking logistics, production and financials.

These integrated systems then serve as a company’s central hub for end-to-end workflow and data. A variety of departments—and the people who require access to them—can access this workflow and data, depending on what they need from it. Data is essential to every modern company, and ERP software makes it easier for companies to collect, organize, analyze—and distribute this information throughout their organizations.
