A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun. When the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow over a portion of our planet. This casts a shadow on Earth, reducing sunlight by either fully or partially. Sometimes when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, only a portion of its light is obscured. This is a partial solar eclipse. The Moon can also completely cover the Sun, causing a total solar eclipse.

If you have ever taken a magnifying glass outside on a sunny day and focused sunlight onto leaves, branches or other flammable objects in order to watch them burn—you might remember that the concentrated light from your lens can start fires. If you gaze directly at the sun, its light will focus on a small spot of your retina at the back of your eye. It is dangerous to look at, and can cause blindness. In addition, you will not feel it happening because there are no pain receptors in your retina.

To see a solar eclipse, you must wear special glasses or other devices. Watch the Sun through your eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer during the partial phases of the eclipse before and after totality. The only safe way to look directly at the Sun is during a total eclipse, when the Moon blocks out its bright face.
